Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

Dictionary sources tell me that the phrase ‘An elephant in the room’ may be defined as ‘any serious problem that everyone is aware of but which they ignore and choose not to mention’. We all know this. We also all have one. Some of us have several. For some of us, things are getting pretty tight with the number of elephants we’ve got crammed into the precious real estate of our heart. But regardless of whether you have one or one hundred elephants, one thing is certain, you know they’re there, you’re trying to ignore them and they have a name…

  • Lust
  • Pornography
  • Masturbation
  • Addiction
  • Substance Abuse
  • Filthy Language
  • Anger
  • Emotional Outbursts
  • Criticism or Negativity
  • Envy
  • Pride
  • Anxiety
  • Laziness
  • Gluttony
  • Lack of Self Control
  • Lack of Discipline
  • Lack of Spiritual Discipline
  • Willful Disobedience of God

… and the list could go on (and on) as you fill in the blank with your own particular struggle.

Now, we could do one of two things here. We could spend some time working through this list, decide which are legitimate and which are not. We could think of all the reasons why these things become elephants and all the excuses as to why we should just let sleeping elephants lie. After all they’ve been around long enough already; why bother them and are they really causing anybody any harm. And besides, you don’t understand everything that I’ve gone through and how hard life is for me. Or we cut to the chase and ask and answer the hard questions. Which is what we must do, because while these elephants take up prime real estate in our lives there is less room for God. Yeah, I said it. Let it sink in. The elephant is there, because you are choosing it over God.

  • What is the elephant in the room for you?
  • What is that thing that you are fully aware of but refuse to acknowledge?
  • What is that thing that you are fully aware of but choose to ignore?
  • What is that thing that you are fully aware of but refuse to deal with?
  • What is that thing that you are fully aware of but making excuses for?

Or to put it another way…

  • What is that thing that is keeping you from your relationship with the Father?
  • What is that thing that is keeping you from deepening your Faith?
  • What is that thing that is keeping you from experiencing real freedom in Christ?
  • What is that thing that is keeping you from being all that God created you to be?

Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason, it says, “Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” Therefore, be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16making the most of your time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:11-15

It’s time to rid your room of the elephant (or elephants)…

Will it be messy? Most likely!

Will it be difficult? Harder than you think!

Will it be worth it? Absolutely!

1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
